Community Board Basics

  • Each Community District has a Community Board serving as the local representative board of city gov’t
  • 59 community boards in NYC.
  • Each one consists of up to 50 unsalaried members, half of whom are nominated by their district's City Council members.
  • Has committees, holds monthly meetings and public hearings.
  • Plays advisory role in issues involving community welfare, including land use and zoning issues, and making recommendations in the city's budget process.
  • District manager (salaried position) appointed by board.
