Research Center Services

This page explains the ways that the Research Center is and, sometimes, is not accessible for different groups of users.  We hope this information is useful to you for planning.  If there is something else we should consider, please send us an email: research@journalism.cuny.edu.

• How the in-person space is organized. If you would like to come to our physical space, but you are not sure if it feels right for you, here are a few things you should know.  We hope to update this page with a schematic and panoramic images.
  • We are located on the 3rd floor of a building with a bank of two elevators.
  • To get to the Research Center you pass a common area for students, a security desk, and locked doors.
  • The research center is positioned to the side of a common area known as the Newsroom.
  • The space is a single room with about 800 square feet.
  • The front doors stay open and are flanked on either side by glass panels that face into the Newsroom.
  • The Research Center has no exterior walls, and consequently, no windows facing the outdoors.
  • The Research Center contains three walls with bookshelves, two small offices, a desk with someone who can help you, four tables, and four step ladders.
  • One table contains computers, including a Bloomberg terminal.  There are two small tables for patrons that are round and seat three people.  There is one oval-shaped table for patrons that seats six people.
  • There is a HVAC system that generally leaves the Research Center on the cooler side, and one Blueair air filtration unity in the center.
  • Face masks are not required, and it is also not uncommon for staff or patrons to wear masks. If you want to wear a mask but you have forgotten yours, they are available at the security desk.
• Accessing materials on high shelves.  The research center has 18 book shelves and most of them have eight levels.  The sixth, seventh, and eighth levels cannot be reached by most people in a sitting position, and the seventh and eighth levels cannot be reached by most people in a standing position without the assistance of a ladder.  You can request a book to the Research Center in CUNY first and we will get it from the shelf and hold it at the desk for you.
• DVD closed captioning.  The Research Center has a small collection of about 100 DVDs.  Although the catalog does not indicate whether they are captioned, we have conducted a spot check and believe that they all do have captions.  Don't hesitate to reach out to ask us to check a particular title in advance: circulation@journalism.cuny.edu
• Requesting interpretation.  If you would like to have American Sign Language interpretation services in the Research Center, please email research@journalism.cuny.edu and we can make this request on your behalf.
• Web content accessibility. We are in the process of reviewing our online resources for web-accessibility.  Some of the issues we have seen so far that will need to be addressed include buttons that are missing labels for text readers, images that are missing alt-text, and checking to see whether youtube videos we link-out to are appropriately captioned.
